Ok, so I've not been a very frequent blogger. It's now been just over a year since I last added anything. I'll try to keep it up a bit more regularly from here. The past few months have been momentous, so I'll try to make a bit of a summary (mostly with pictures)...
Sahel Academy - August 2012
Heavy rain fell in the region during July and August, causing the Niger river to rise to levels unseen in a generation. Despite the heroic attempts of a massive team of people with pumps and sandbags, Sahel Academy was flooded on the evening of Tuesday August 21st. The Centre Biblique campus down the road (where I live, also home to a church and a Bible school) also flooded.
Sahel Academy - September 2012
School had to be put on-hold temporarily while a new (temporary) location was found. A massive rescue operation was launched to retrieve as much as possible from the flooded buildings using large trucks and canoes. It was difficult, dirty, expensive and at times discouraging... but we did it! New locations were found and school re-opened on September 17th, only 4 weeks after the flood.
Sahel Academy - October 2012
The flood waters did not hang around as long as expected, which meant that we were all able to return to the campus for a visit... and a softball tournament! It was exciting to see the the campus looking almost "normal", but also quite sobering to survey the damage that has been done.
Sahel Academy - the future?
Please join us in praying that the flood waters don't return, as the usual peak for the river occurs in Dec/Jan. Plans are being made to prepare the campus for a full return to action in August 2013, including building defenses against future flooding.
